Book suggestions for young readers

I  took my 3 year-old to the library recently and while she loved playing “let’s see how many books I can take off the shelves so I can keep my mom on her toes”, I spotted a few books that I loved as a kid and a few I’ve never read and still want to. I actually squealed when I spotted the first book on the list. I completely forgot about it but as soon as I saw it, I put that one in my library book pile.

Amelia Bedelia – Peggy Parish

I absolutely loved this book when I was younger and had first learned to read. More than anything, the book gives me warm fuzzies because it brings me back to my childhood but it’s also a really great book for the young ones just starting to read.

Ramona The Pest – Beverly Cleary

This was another one of my favorites and I think I read every Ramona book that’s ever been published. I remember wanting to be Ramona and live in her world with an older sister that I could pester. Too bad for me, I was the oldest in my family (lol).

Charlotte’s Web – E.B. White

Are you sitting down? Are you sure? I’ve actually never read this book but I just got it and it’s on my reading list. I don’t know how it’s even possible that I could’ve skipped this book when I was younger but I promise you, I will get on it very soon.

Little House On The Prairie – Laura Ingalls Wilder

I have LOVED Little House On The Prairie since I was a little kid. The show is still one of my all time favorite’s and I can’t wait until my daughter is old enough to enjoy this book series. I was so caught up in it that I would actually dress up in pioneer garb and skip outside around the house with my dress and bonnet. You’re right, that explains a lot about me. What? It’s not like I do that now…..at least not as often.

Matilda – Roald Dahl

Oh, how I adore this book. So much so that words can’t describe just how wonderful it is. It’s so full of imagination and holds a very special place in my heart. I think this is certainly a book that you can enjoy at any age.

What were a few of your favorite books when you were a young reader?

I read all of these except Matilda as a young reader. Most of them I read more than once. Other favorite early authors were Judy Blume (the Fudge Series) and Gordon Korman. These last 2 I am hoping will appeal to my boys who also love to read, but I have a hard time knowing what BOYS will enjoy. If your readers have any suggestions there I’m all ears!

I loved Judy Blume as a kid. I remember reading James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory over and over. I may have to try a few of yours listed with my daughter. She loves to read (well, be read to I guess.)

Oh, the memories. I was a Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown fanatic! Everywhere I went I had either of the books from these series in my bag. I’ve read every book on your list except Amelia Bedelia. My daughters are stocking their bookshelf. I’ll have to add these favorites!

My favorite Christmas gift I ever received as a child was the boxed set of all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. Before my daughter was born I ordered a set for her and some day I hope she loves them as much as I did.
