The silence woke her. She sat up in bed and adjusted her eyes to the dark of the room. Right before she woke up, she had been dreaming of strong hands around her neck. She quickly turned on the bedside light to see that she was alone. But the dream seemed so real. She slowly got out of bed to go check the hall and turned on the light. All was clear. She laughed quietly at herself as she crawled back into her bed. After drifting back to sleep, it was the opening of the closet door that woke her.

The silence woke her. You know the type, the deafening kind of silence. She pressed the button on her cell phone to illuminate the screen. It is only 3am. It has only been 3 months. 3 months since her husband asked her for a divorce. 3 months since her world shattered. 3 months since the silence has been waking her up every night. She throws back the covers and gropes in the dark of her still new surroundings, making her way to the bathroom. She refuses to turn on a light. The light makes things real.
